Here are some
common questions:
1. I have been hearing a lot about mindful eating,
what is it exactly and how does it work?
Answer: Mindful Eating is all about relearning to
listen to your body. Eating when you are hungry and stopping when you are full. It is about choice, checking in
with yourself throughout a meal and deciding if you want to continue eating, or if the food still has a pleasurable taste.
2. But, if I can eat whatever I want, how will I ever
lose weight?
Answer: Because there are no forbidden
foods, you never feel deprived. You know that you can have the food whenever you want,
so there is no need to overdo it. No need to "sneak" french fries off your partners plate. There is no "falling off the wagon", so there are no feelings of guilt or
disappontment, (which can lead some people to eat even more)!
3. I eat when I am not hungry, I eat when I am lonely or depressed. Will
mindful eating help me with those issues?
Answer: YES, because mindful eating is
a process of continually checking in with yourself, it forces you to become aware of your eating. Once
you become aware of why you are eating, you are on your way to only eating when you are actually hungry.
Did you ever notice that food tastes better when you are really hungry? Mindful eating will help you to learn
other ways to deal with your feelings.
4. I am not sure mindful or intuitive eating will work for me,
maybe I should just try one more diet. There are so many diet books out there, they can't all be wrong.
Answer: Unfortunately, because of our culture's
obsession with food and weight, many authors including physicians have gotten on the wave to wealth,
pushing the next big idea in dieting. Low fat, low carbs, protein shakes, there are so many conflicting ideas
out there and yet we continue (as a nation) to get heavier. What gives???
DIETS DON'T WORK!! At least,
not long term. Any diet that is on the market today is a form of short-term starvation. You will lose
weight, it will work for awhile. But, these plans are not lifestyle changes that you can stick to for the
rest of your life. Consequently, when you are given the first opportunity to really eat (usually after you
reach your goal weight), you may eat with such intensity that it feels uncontrollable.
Although this eating may feel uncontrollable, it is
actually a normal response to starving (dieting). This post dieting response is often viewed as lack of willpower.
But, you can't fight biology. When the body is starved, the brain sends out powerful signals to EAT!
Think about it. A person has been ship wrecked on a
desert island. After a few weeks of finding very little available food, he finds a banana tree with plenty of low
hanging fruit. He proceeds to eat 5 bananas in one sitting. Would you say that he lacks willpower? Or, would
you say that he is eating in response to a biological need.
